Coimbatore: George Antonisamy, Archbishop of Madras and Mylapore who took part in the 379th car procession festival of the famous "Our Lady of Holy Rosary Shrine" in Karumathampatti declared the church as a 'Basilica'.

"Our Lady of Holy Rosary Shrine" is an old church in Karumathampatti, Coimbatore district. The car procession of the church is held annually in October. The 379th car procession festival was held today.
The festival began on 27th of September with the flag hoisting ceremony. From then on, every day, various feasts and special mass were being conducted.
The Joint Prayer, which is the main event of the car procession, took place at 8 am on today. Archbishop George Antonisamy, High Diocese of Madras was the guest of honour. He then hoisted the flag on the newly erected flag pole and declared the church, a Basilica and read the letter from Rome to the public, followed by a special mass. The festival will end today with the car procession.
The Archbishop of Coimbatore, Thomas Aquinas, said that the church was declared a holy place (Basilica) by the Vatican in Rome. He said that this had brought happiness to everyone as this is one of the old Churches in the country, and special prayers will be held every day to commemorate it.
Thousands of Christians from Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Karnataka took part in the car procession festival. More than 300 policemen were deployed for the security on the occasion of the car procession festival.
